Unscripted: Overengineering Isn’t What You Think It Is

It's easy to picture it: a gold-plated solution, built in a needlessly complicated way for no real benefit. Maybe it's an architecture that doesn't fit the problem, a codebase buried under abstractions it doesn't need, or a shiny new technique solving a problem nobody has. Is this overengineering? why does it keep happening?

It's also worth asking what happens at the other extreme, when the necessary adjustments don't get made at the right time.
